  4. Blah, I had no idea about the season 3 gear… that’s what I get for not playing WoW any more! 😛 I’ll update this ASAP. Check back in a couple days! 🙂 Thanks for pointing this out!

  5. The sheet looks good. My only qualm would be the choice of veiled gems for socketing. In pvp, one only needs 3% spell hit to cap. That’s easily obtainable for any shadow priest (esp. if you spec for pvp and have no points in Shadow Affinity).

I’d rather place steady, mystic, potent or even radiant gems in the yellow sockets for bonus.

My question is: (this may be better projected to the pvp threads or spell casting or something) is some spell penetration worth considering (even if it’s just minimal) in pvp/arena? I’m very unclear on its mechanics (and it’s 7am, I’m not 100% coherent).

Iam sorry to hear this. More and more good players quit wow. Why do you leave (warhammer) ?

  7. @sdadowman – Here’s something I found at http://www.wowwiki.com/Spell_penetration

    Using Spell Penetration

Especially in PvP, it is difficult to find a well-balanced amount of spell penetration. Against targets with no resistance, it has no effect (and as such is wasted). However, against targets with resistances, spell penetration is a powerful and, in terms of item values, cheap stat. Ideally, a caster should have exactly as much spell penetration as necessary to lower the target’s resistance to zero.

In PvP, good spell penetration values are 40 (to counter Mark of the Wild) and 70 (to counter various single-school resistance buffs, such as the Paladin’s resistance auras); these are usually enough. In PvE, where only few mobs have resistances, especially with Curse of Shadow/Elements active, spell penetration has not much use.

Spell penetration’s effectivity increases with the target’s resistances; i.e. reducing resistance from 100 to 80 results in a higher benefit than reducing it from 20 to 0. However, at some point it might be better to stick to another school, instead of stacking huge amounts of spell penetration at the cost of other stats.

I think spell penetration is probably more important than spell critical for a shadow priest since only half our offensive spells are able to crit. In group PvP it will be likely more important than in 1v1 because there’s a greater chance that your targets will have resist buffs up from one of their party members. But as I said, I no longer play, so this could be way off base.

@cyberaquarius – I got my priest up to level 70 and I was faced with two options. One was to join my guild’s PvE raiding groups but I would have needed to do a lot of prerequisites first and I wasn’t too fond of that. My other option was to focus on the arenas and battlegrounds. On my server, arena wait times were upwards of 20 minutes, which was just ridiculous and I got pretty bored of doing PUG (pick-up group) battlegrounds against organized teams. Unfortunately, my guild put a much greater focus on PvE than PvP, so there weren’t many people who would join me in the field of battle.

After a couple weeks of mindless, boring play, I realized that I wasn’t having much fun with WoW any more. I decided to sell my account, even though I didn’t have any other games to play at the time. Seriously, there are ZERO games out there these days that capture my interest, aside from Warhammer Online, but the release just got pushed back to Q2, 2008. Unfortunately, I’m not in the beta yet. 😦

I’m keeping busy trying to set up a good, reliable blog (the nameservers are propegating as I write this…) people can use as a source of information for Warhammer Online. I want to have equipment guides similar to this one, as well as leveling guides, quest guides, and other general advice. I also want to maintain a weekly webcomic, which I have a bunch of scripts already written for. Too bad my drawing is horrendous… I need to find a good, cheap artist! 😛

PS. I’m updating my spreadsheets with season 3 stuff and should have it done in the next day or so.

    Thanks for coming back! 🙂

  9. Theses yellow gems are unique equiped.

Plus, there’s a new PVP cloak with 60 heroic marks.

  10. thx a lot for the fast update, this gear is my aim 😉
i found one more problem in the gear Yellow / Orange (Potent Ornate Topaz) is Unique-Equipped

Iam sorry to hear that you quite because of the lack of PvP-Arena support. Blizz has fixed this problem mainly. On my Server (Europe/german) waiting time is less then 1 min (evening and weekend)except 2vs2 around 10 min i guess. Guild’s PvE raiding prereq. should be no prob with a good guild. In my Guild once a month a gruop of players help the new ones to get prereq. finished. So i guess you had bad luck on you server.

I wish you all the best with Warhammer Online but i really don´t think that they can keep the release date. if you keep the quality of this Topic your Warhammer blog will by a big success.
To bad for us wow-gamers that you quite 😉

    Anyway all the best cyber

  11. Thanks for catching that mistake guys! I swapped out three of the Potent Ornate Topaz gems with Potent Pyrestones, which have the same stats but are crafted and not unique-equipped.

@Gherart – Can you please give me the name of the cloak you’re talking about? I’m doing a Wowhead search and I can’t seem to find anything better than a Sergeant’s Heavy Cape after applying an “obtained through PvP” or “Sold by a vendor” filter (usable by Priests). Here’s the list I can find: http://www.wowhead.com/?items=4&filter=sl=16;ub=5;cr=93;crs=1;crv=0#0-2+1

    Everything’s been updated!

  12. I post your Gear refering to your site at:
    http://www.shadowpriest.com/viewtopic.php?t=7189

There are a few more Things people point out about it for example
    – Powerful Earthstorm Diamond Requires at least 3 Blue gems
    – Wrong Cloak, wrong Ring, wrong Item-Bonus (Gloves)

maybe you like to join the discussion or type your answer here and in will post it there for you

    Comment by cyberaquarius — November 14, 2007 @ 1:29 pm

  13. Hey, thanks for sending off a link to my site! It’s nice to have all these extra eyes to catch my mistakes! 😉 Anyway, I replied to that post under the name, “Brainclutter.”

Some people have mentioned that you can find better BoJ items… and you can. However, the purpose of this post is to show the best items you can get through PvP. It ignores any and all PvE items because there are certain people out there who HATE the idea of raid grinding for a low % chance to gain the item they want.

If you want a good set and you like to PvP, this is the article for you! 🙂

  14. Requirement for Trinket – Battlemaster’s Audacity (30,000 honour, 40 eye of the storm) is wrong. Should be AV marks. You’ll have to reflect this change in your totals.

  16. Here’s the new PVP cloak: Cloak of Subjugated Power (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33304)

It’s purchasable by Geras (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=18525) in Shattrath City for 60 x Badge of Justice (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29434)

    Comment by Synge-Gurubashi-Horde — November 26, 2007 @ 5:25 pm

  17. Hi Synge – Thanks for the comment. That cloak does rock, however, the whole purpose of this guide is to get items through PvP, not PvE. There are a lot of amazing items in PvE, but they take a long time to get, with no guarantee that you’ll actually get ’em (drop rate % / groupies that want the item).

    Comment by brainclutter — November 26, 2007 @ 6:17 pm

  18. You’re guaranteed the Cloak of Subjugated Power just through grinding PVE Heroic Instances – it’s Blizzard trying to encourage (read: force) the hard-core PVPers into doing some PVE content to advance their characters.

It’ll take a while to earn enough Badges of Justice to get the cloak, but it’s a pretty easy thing to do… people could just do the Heroic Instance Daily everyday and get about 5 – 7 per day.

I see your points, though, and I still don’t feel as if the Cloak of Subjugated Power is *THAT* much better than the Heavy Sergeant’s Cloak – not enough to warrant having to do at LEAST 12 heroic instances (Botanica once per day will yield 5 Badges of Justice… more if it happens to be the Heroic Daily. Could grind out AV over a weekend and obtain the current PVP cloak without problem =)

    Comment by Synge-Gurubashi-Horde — November 26, 2007 @ 6:32 pm

  19. Indeed. It is technically a guarantee, and a very good option if the battlegrounds are starting to wear you down! 🙂

    Comment by brainclutter — November 26, 2007 @ 6:34 pm

  20. Hey Guys!

You posted a really nice gear for Shadow Priest. Do you think it should be good to get the belt, boots, neck and the bracer with crit instead of the one without crit but with + stam, res, int and dmg? Hehe you’ll say : Look at your previous sentence, crit or more stam, res, int and dmg but I only got +644 shadow damage and each time Mind Blast and Shadow Word Death Crit, it doing 5k dmg. You also used gem with + Crit. If we look the difference with the + crit, it’ll be -24 stam, -11 int, -14 res, -19dmg and + 98 crit. So my question is, should it be better to focus on more Crit and losing all the other stats ? I know this is a lot of stats lost for the + crit but I want your opinion about this.

    Thanks

    Comment by Vechkin — December 15, 2007 @ 11:48 am

  21. Hmmm, this is a good question and I’ll have to research the answer because I no longer play WoW, however, I look at it this way:

Stam, Int, Res, and Spell Damage are absolutes and stick with you always.

Crit is a “sometimes” kind of thing.

I guess it comes down to your style of play. Do you want to be able to count on the additional health, power, resilience, and damage or are you willing to sacrifice all that for a % chance that your spells will crit? You should also factor in that crit only affects certain offensive spells, not all of them.

I suggest reading this: http://www.wowwiki.com/Formulas:Critical_hit_chance . It may help you make a decision.

    Comment by brainclutter — December 15, 2007 @ 12:42 pm

  22. Nice article, bookmarked it for reference though I’m probably going discipline for arenas.

    Regarding the +crit question:

It depends on who or what you’re fighting, imho. If you’re fighting well-geared arena junkies, then +crit is going to be dampened quite a lot by their huge amount of resilience – a lot of people go as far as saying +crit builds are obsolete now in PvP. In Battlegrounds where you get more casual/PVE-geared players, or in dungeons, +crit may be more worthwhile. Personally I’m gearing for stamina, resilience and spell power (whether it be +damage or +heal).
